Maggi stops sale in India, maintains it is safe in Middle East

Nestle India has said it is temporarily taking its bestselling instant noodle brand Maggi off the shelves in India. It comes amid concerns about safety as several states have been testing the product for higher-than-allowed levels of lead. They have also been testing for the chemical monosodium glutamate, widely known as MSG. Nestle said in a statement on Friday that “Maggi noodles were completely safe. But recent developments and unfounded concerns about the product have led to an environment of confusion for the consumer.” The firm said the confusion had developed to such an extent “that we have decided to withdraw the product off the shelves, despite the product being safe”, but promised the noodles would return to the market as soon as the current problem was dealt with. Maggi noodles had already been banned for 15 days in India’s capital Delhi and states including Gujarat. However, other states had deemed…

Dominant Mumbai Indians win second IPL crown

The Mumbai Indians were crowned champions of Pepsi IPL 2015 after they registered a resounding victory over the Chennai Super Kings in the title-clash at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Rohit Sharma kept his love affair with the venue after he blitzed his way to a half-century first up and then ended the day lifting the coveted IPL Trophy. After setting CSK a target of 203, the MI bowlers kept striking at regular intervals, took all the opportunities that came their way and restricted their opponents to 161-8 to win by 41 runs. Eden Gardens proved lucky for Mumbai Indians once again. They had won their previous IPL title in 2013 at the same venue against the same opponent, CSK. Put in to bat, the Mumbai Indians built their innings around two partnerships, as they set an asking rate of 10.15 for Chennai on a flat strip. Skipper Rohit Sharma…

Jayalalithaa takes oath as Tamil Nadu CM

Ending more than seven months of administrative uncertainty in Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa was sworn in the chief minister at a glittering ceremony in the centenary auditorium of University of Madras on Saturday at 11.05am. In attendance were industry heads and film stars, but what indicated the political resurgence of Jayalalithaa was the presence of BJP leaders Pon Radhakrishnan and L Ganesan, among others. Jayalalithaa, 67, now the 29th chief minister of Tamil Nadu, now matches the record with DMK leader M Karunanidhi of being CM five times, though the AIADMK leader did it twice after she was forced to resign from the post following court verdicts that disqualified her. The ministers, for the first time in the history of the state, took oath as a chorus. Hundreds of party men from far off places thronged the venue since morning to get a glimpse of the leader, who is returning to…

Court clears Jayalalitha of corruption charges

An appeals court in India has cleared former chief minister of the southern state of Tamil Nadu Jayalalitha of involvement in a corruption scandal. Ms Jayalalitha was convicted and sentenced for four years by a trial court in September 2014. She was found guilty of amassing unaccounted-for wealth of more than $10m and had to quit as the chief minister. Monday’s ruling means she can return as the head of Tamil Nadu government. Jayalalitha, a former actress, is one of India’s most controversial and colourful politicians. She has been a leading figure in south Indian politics for three decades. As soon as the high court in the southern state of Karnataka announced its verdict on Monday morning, Ms Jayalalitha’s supporters began celebrating outside the court in Bangalore. Her supporters outside her home in the southern city of Chennai were seen distributing sweets, shouting slogans and weeping tears of joy. The high court also…

Salman Khan sentenced to five-year jail term in hit-and-run case

Bollywood actor Salman Khan was on Wednesday found guilty and sentenced to five years in jail for a 2002 hit-and-run accident that left one man dead and four others injured. Additional Sessions Judge D.W. Deshpande announced the verdict at a packed court here. He is likely to be taken into police custody soon and taken to the Arthur Road Central Jail in south Mumbai. The five-year sentence automatically ruled out the bail option for the Bollywood star since it was outside the jurisdiction of the sessions to grant bail in a case in which someone has been sentenced to three years or more in prison. He will now have to apply to the Bombay High Court for the same. The quantum of sentence follows the court holding Salman guilty in the case and arguments between the prosecution team led by special public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat and the defence team led…
