Indian expat in coma for 2 years in UAE brought home

An Indian expatriate, lying in coma for more than two years at an Abu Dhabi hospital following a road accident, was finally repatriated to his native place on Tuesday. The move came following a sustained effort from the Indian embassy and patient’s relatives to help Chithiravel Vinaitheertha Udaiyar, from Tamil Nadu, return after a long-fought compensation case. The Indian embassy persuaded Udaiyar’s employer to file a case against an insurance company, which was trying to wriggle out from paying compensation. The court subsequently issued a judgment ordering compensation for his family, Times of India reported. Chithiravel was brought to Chennai by a scheduled Air India flight on Tuesday morning and later taken to Salem by road. Dubai Municipality is now distributing free umbrellas to protect from heat

Dubai Municipality on Sunday began distributing free umbrellas to the public so they could protect themselves from the summer sun. Khalid Mohammed Badri, Director of Corporate Marketing and Relations Department said in a press release that the municipality distributed more than 1,000 umbrellas on the first day of the campaign. He said places with high density of population were selected for distribution of umbrellas to the public. Omar Al Marri, head of public relations at the Municipality said a team will be handing out umbrellas at metro stations, parks and beach for a few days at peak heat hours. “Our employees distribute the umbrellas to everyone with a smile by telling them: Dubai Municipality is with you to overcome the heat of the sun because you are in Happy Dubai,” he said. Indian nurse found dead in Dubai apartment

A 30-year-old Indian nurse, hailing from Kottayam district in Kerala, was found dead inside her flat in Dubai. The deceased has been identified as Santhi Thomas, who was living with her husband Jobi (Antony) in Karama. According to media reports, Joby found her hanging from the fan in the bedroom when he got back from work on Saturday. Santhi, who was working with a private hospital, was the daughter of KV Thomas, the former vice president of the Payippad panchayat in Changanassery.  Santhi had been married to Joby for four years and joined him in Dubai around two years ago. The couple has a three-year-old daughter, who has been living with Joby’s family in Kerala. Sharjah Airport launches Smart Gates to avoid long queues

The Sharjah Airport Authority on Sunday launched a new Smart Gates system at its passport control that will help avoid long queues for having entries and exits stamped. The system had a soft launch as a trial in November last year with 8,500 passengers using the system successfully, Gulf News reported. As many as 16 Smart Gates are available at passport control, eight at the arrivals and eight at the departures, where registered passengers can just scan scan their passports and boarding cards and leave. Passengers will have to do a one-time registration to avail the system, which can be done either at the arrivals or departure. Registration counters are also available at Sharjah Immigration offices. “The system was introduced as part of our efforts to ease the passage through Sharjah International Airport right from parking to boarding,” said Ali Salem Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority. The move is part of the world’s first government accelerators, a new government approach that will accelerate the achievement of the National Agenda of the UAE Vision 2021. An Indian expatriate in the UAE, who has not seen his family for nearly 35 years, will soon be reunited with his brothers back home, Gulf News has reported. Jai Singh, 67, had lost contact with his family over the years and three years back, due to being an illegal, he ended up in jail. Singh, who speaks only Marathi and broken Arabic, has forgotten the contact details of his brothers back home, the report says. According to officials, the man had initially worked as a newspaper delivery boy in the first seven to eight years of his stay in the UAE. UAE residents on Thursday morning were overjoyed when the blocked video, voice call features on WhatsApp was enabled after a several months. Social media was abuzz with messages and tweets announcing the “good news”. Mobile phones did not stop ringing as elated residents took the opportunity to freely connect with their friends and family back home. The first and second days of Eid will be paid holidays for private sector employees in the UAE, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation announced on Saturday. Earlier, the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) announced that the Eid Al Fitr holiday for federal ministries and authorities in the UAE will begin on Saturday, Ramadan 29 (corresponding to June 24). If Eid falls on Sunday, June 25, work will resume on Wednesday, June 28. If Eid falls on Monday, June 26, the holiday will still begin on Saturday, Ramadan 29, with work resuming on Sunday, July 2.
