Leading by example, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Dubai Ruler’s young daughter Sheikha Shamma bint Mohammed met with labourers in the UAE as part of the UAE Food Bank initiative – launched by her father earlier this month.
Sheikh Mohammed who shared the video on his Instagram page wrote: “Proud of my daughter Shamma who contributed today in the first volunteering activity as part of UAE Food Bank initiative. Our philosophy in the humanitarian work is simple… Always lead by example.”
In the video, which has gathered over 86,000 views in 18 hours, Sheikha Shamma Bint Mohammad can be seen visiting a construction site on Sheikh Zayed Road, and distributing food to workers.
Flanked by officials, the young member of the Dubai royal family visited the construction site wearing a white t-shirt topped with an official UAE Food Bank jacket over a pair of trousers and sporting a white helmet.
In an interview with the Arabic channel Dubai TV, Sheikha Shamma said: “I am glad to conduct this charity act along with my friends,” and encouraged fellow students in the UAE to volunteer and help the needy.
Shamma is among Sheikh Mohammed’s youngest children. An avid equestrian, she has also participated in the Pink Caravan march in Dubai to raise awareness about breast cancer.
The UAE Food Bank
The UAE Food Bank will be implemented in stages in collaboration with more than 500 volunteers of students from schools and universities in the UAE.
Around 10 per cent of hotels, restaurants and hypermarket chains in Dubai are already donating their edible excess food and goods to the needy.
The initiative coincides with the Year of Giving, which was declared by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan last month in December.
With his wife Sheikha Hind as chairperson of the initiative and his children – getting on the ground – involved in the implementation process, Sheikh Mohammed’s ambitious and noble UAE Food Bank initiative is bound for success.
