All about Garangao: The Children’s Festival

This post was originally published on 29 June 2015 and the content may be outdated.

Garangao is a traditional children’s festival celebrated after the breaking of the fast on the 14th night of Ramadan when half of the fasting month is over.

The festival is celebrated in the Gulf region and is known by different names in each region: Garangao or Garangaou in Qatar and Bahrain, Karkee’aan or Qariqaan in Saudi Arabia, Gargee’aan in Kuwait, Al-Majeena Karkiaan in Iraq, Garangashoch, At-Tablah or Qarnakosh in Oman, and Hag Al Leylah in UAE

During the festival, children get dressed up in festival robes, carry a bag around their neck, and go around in groups in the neighbourhood, singing special songs, knocking the doors of neighbours, and receiving nuts and candy from them.

Nowadays the simple cotton bags have paved way for colourful and trendy bags with popular cartoon characters and other designs.

Supermarkets and department stores also sell ready-made bags filled with candies and nuts. Prices range from QR 5 to QR 50, depending on the quality and variety of contents.

It is also an occasion when many organisations and shopping malls conduct special events to celebrate the Garangao Festival, with activities and gifts for children.

Even though the Garangao Night is on 14th of Ramadan, many organisations in Qatar have already started their celebrations this week.
