Cabinet approves draft law prohibiting sharing of Karwa taxi

Qatar’s Cabinet has approved a draft law which prohibits Karwa Taxis from picking up multiple passengers traveling on same route. The practice, commonly known as “sharing taxi” is popular in Qatar whereby the passengers agree to pay a fixed amount to the driver. The taxi driver benefits in this arrangement as he can charge more than the meter rate. However this used to create inconvenience for some passengers as they are sharing ride with strangers. As per the new law, this practice has been legally prohibited and violators would be penalised. The Cabinet which met yesterday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani approved a proposal by the Minister of Interior regarding Karwa taxi, The Peninsula reported. Indian schools in Qatar to reopen on September 9, No change in age limits

Indian schools in Qatar will reopen on September 9, 2018 after the summer vacation as the Ministry of Education and Higher Education has approved a request from the institutions. No change in age limit for KG admissions Following the requests from Indian schools, the Ministry has also revoked the decision to reduce the upper age limit for KG class admission by one year. For Indian schools, the existing age limit will continue for one more year. Earlier, Ministry had issued a circular stating that maximum age to join KG1 has been revised to 3 years, 11 months and 29 days as of September 30 instead of 4 years, 11 months and 29 days. This would have affected students whose parents have decided to skip a year. If the rule was implemented, such parents would have to seek admission in KG2. The decision by the Indian government to issue passports in two colors – blue and orange – and leave the address page of the document blank has evoked mixed reactions among the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) community. What are the changes As per the new rules, Indians who require emigration clearance (ECR) – those who have not passed 10th grade – will be issued orange passports, while those who do not need emigration clearance (ECNR), will continue with the blue ones. An Indian expatriate in UAE became an instant millionaire on Sunday after winning Dh12 million in the latest Big Ticket raffle draw in Abu Dhabi. 42-year-old Hari Krishnan V. Nair, a resident of Dubai, hit the jackpot at the draw held in Abu Dhabi International Airport. Krishnan, who hails from Kerala, won Dh12 million (around Rs 20.6 crores) – the biggest-ever raffle prize money by the Big Ticket – for his ticket number 086828. Hotel reservations not compulsory for on arrival visa to Qatar: Ministry

Hotel reservations or other conditions are not compulsory for obtaining different types of on-arrival tourist visas in Qatar, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) has clarified. However, visitors may be asked to provide the address of their place of stay in Qatar, the MoI explained in a post on social media. The general conditions for getting on-arrival tourist visas are six months’ passport validity and a confirmed return or onward ticket. Qatar recently introduced different types of visas, including on-arrival visas, e-authorisation and e-visas. 30 days free tourist visas Visitors from 47 countries (including India) can enter and stay in Qatar for 30 days with this type of visa. NRIs who harass, abandon their wives may get their passports cancelled

Non-resident Indians (NRIs) who harass their wives or desert them could face impoundment or cancellation of their passport if Cental government accepts the recommendations of a high-level panel, Hindustan Times have reported citing an undisclosed source. Once the passport is impounded, the NRI husband — if present in India — won’t be able to leave the country until the case is settled. If abroad, he will have to be deported to India, the report added. Following several complaints lodged by women deserted by their NRI husbands, the ministry of external affairs (MEA) constituted the committee in May to look into various legal and regulatory challenges and suggest measures to address them. Qatar Airways flight makes emergency landing in Hyderabad after pilot falls ill

A Qatar Airways flight – QR 964 – made an emergency landing at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad after one of its pilots suffered pain in his chest, Indian newspapers reported. According to airport sources, the Romanian co-pilot, Andre Dinu, complained of severe pain in his chest while the aircraft was at a cruising altitude. Times of India reports that he he collapsed on-board. After seeking permission from RGAI air traffic control, the 14-hour long Doha to Denpasar (Indonesia) flight was diverted to Hyderabad where it made an emergency landing around 12.05 am. Doctors attended to Dinu immediately after landing and after finding his condition critical, they immediately rushed him to the Apollo Hospitals in Jubilee Hills at around 1.20 am. NRI voting rights: Centre agrees to amend law, Seeks two weeks time

India’s Central government has agreed to amend the law wherein NRIs had to travel to India to vote during elections. Attorney General KK Venugopal told the Supreme Court that the government has accepted in principle that the facility of voting from the foreign land could be extended to NRIs. He said that a group of ministers met on Thursday and it was decided that the Representation of People Act will have to be amended to enable NRIs to vote without coming to India. Centre has sought two weeks time for submitting reply in the Court regarding the changes to be made in Representation of People’s Act. The Supreme Court had last week given one week to the government to take a decision on giving voting rights to the NRIs. India captain Mithali Raj scripted history on Wednesday as she became the all-time leading run-getter in women’s one-day internationals. Mithali, who is leading India at the ICC Women’s World Cup in England, overtook Charlotte Edwards after scoring her 34th run against Australia in Bristol. Indian nurse found dead in Dubai apartment

A 30-year-old Indian nurse, hailing from Kottayam district in Kerala, was found dead inside her flat in Dubai. The deceased has been identified as Santhi Thomas, who was living with her husband Jobi (Antony) in Karama. According to media reports, Joby found her hanging from the fan in the bedroom when he got back from work on Saturday. Santhi, who was working with a private hospital, was the daughter of KV Thomas, the former vice president of the Payippad panchayat in Changanassery.  Santhi had been married to Joby for four years and joined him in Dubai around two years ago.
