NRIs who harass, abandon their wives may get their passports cancelled

Non-resident Indians (NRIs) who harass their wives or desert them could face impoundment or cancellation of their passport if Cental government accepts the recommendations of a high-level panel, Hindustan Times have reported citing an undisclosed source. Once the passport is impounded, the NRI husband — if present in India — won’t be able to leave the country until the case is settled. If abroad, he will have to be deported to India, the report added. Following several complaints lodged by women deserted by their NRI husbands, the ministry of external affairs (MEA) constituted the committee in May to look into various legal and regulatory challenges and suggest measures to address them. The panel has also recommended that cases of domestic violence be included in the scope of extradition treaties that India inks with other countries. Qatar Airways flight makes emergency landing in Hyderabad after pilot falls ill

A Qatar Airways flight – QR 964 – made an emergency landing at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad after one of its pilots suffered pain in his chest, Indian newspapers reported. According to airport sources, the Romanian co-pilot, Andre Dinu, complained of severe pain in his chest while the aircraft was at a cruising altitude. Times of India reports that he he collapsed on-board. After seeking permission from RGAI air traffic control, the 14-hour long Doha to Denpasar (Indonesia) flight was diverted to Hyderabad where it made an emergency landing around 12.05 am. Doctors attended to Dinu immediately after landing and after finding his condition critical, they immediately rushed him to the Apollo Hospitals in Jubilee Hills at around 1.20 am. NRI voting rights: Centre agrees to amend law, Seeks two weeks time

India’s Central government has agreed to amend the law wherein NRIs had to travel to India to vote during elections. Attorney General KK Venugopal told the Supreme Court that the government has accepted in principle that the facility of voting from the foreign land could be extended to NRIs. He said that a group of ministers met on Thursday and it was decided that the Representation of People Act will have to be amended to enable NRIs to vote without coming to India. Centre has sought two weeks time for submitting reply in the Court regarding the changes to be made in Representation of People’s Act. The Supreme Court had last week given one week to the government to take a decision on giving voting rights to the NRIs. India’s Mithali Raj becomes highest run-getter in women’s ODIs

India captain Mithali Raj scripted history on Wednesday as she became the all-time leading run-getter in women’s one-day internationals. Mithali, who is leading India at the ICC Women’s World Cup in England, overtook Charlotte Edwards after scoring her 34th run against Australia in Bristol. The 34-year-old reached the landmark in her 183rd ODI, taking 164 innings. She also became the first woman cricketer to score 6,000 ODI runs. Indian nurse found dead in Dubai apartment

A 30-year-old Indian nurse, hailing from Kottayam district in Kerala, was found dead inside her flat in Dubai. The deceased has been identified as Santhi Thomas, who was living with her husband Jobi (Antony) in Karama. According to media reports, Joby found her hanging from the fan in the bedroom when he got back from work on Saturday. Santhi, who was working with a private hospital, was the daughter of KV Thomas, the former vice president of the Payippad panchayat in Changanassery.  Santhi had been married to Joby for four years and joined him in Dubai around two years ago. The couple has a three-year-old daughter, who has been living with Joby’s family in Kerala. Passengers suffer as Air India flight’s AC stops working

Air India passengers on a Delhi-bound flight from West Bengal’s Bagdogra were left in discomfort on Sunday as the air-conditioning system malfunctioned. The flight, AI-880, had 168 passengers and made a safe landing in Delhi. In a video footage, the passengers were seen to be huffing and puffing in the heat. India’s fruits, vegetables exports to Qatar rise by 15% in two weeks

India’s exports of fresh fruit and vegetables to Qatar have jumped by 15% within a two-week period because of an increase in demand, media reports said. India’s food exports to Qatar increased after Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain imposed an economic blockade on Qatar. According to a senior official of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (Apeda) many cargo airlines have delivered goods in large quantities to Qatar in the first two weeks of the crisis. Indian passports to be printed in both English and Hindi

Indian passports would now be in both Hindi and English, instead of just English, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj announced on Friday. Personal details in passports are now printed only in English and Swaraj said she had received several complaints about it “Passports should at least be bilingual. All Arab countries have their passport in Arabic, Germany makes it in German and Russia makes it in Russian.
