Doha Bank looking to expand operations in India

Doha Bank, one of the largest commercial banks of Qatar, is looking at the possibility of setting up a subsidiary in India. “Our long-term view is to set up a full scale subsidiary for our Indian operations which is needed to enter more cities”, Doha Bank CEO R Seetharaman told reporters. Presently, Doha Bank has three branches in India – two in Mumbai and one in Kochi. Seetharaman said that one of the Mumbai branches would be relocated to some other city within the country, adding that West Bengal is in its radar because of the substantial presence of SMEs in the state. IKEA moves closer to opening first store in India, buys land

IKEA, world’s largest furniture retailer, stated that it has purchased its first land in the country in Hyderabad, moving closer to its plan of setting up 25 stores in India at an investment of Rs 10,500 crore over the next decade. “This step is yet another affirmation of IKEA’s expansion plans in India. The company is in parallel evaluating suitable sites in the cities of Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi NCR (National Capital Region) to open 25 stores in the long-term,” the company said in a statement. IKEA bought 13 acre land close to the IT hub in Hyderabad’s HITEC city. Bomb threat : Mumbai-Dubai flight makes emergency landing in Muscat

A Jet Airways flight that left Mumbai for Dubai on Thursday afternoon was forced to land in Muscat after it received a mid-air bomb threat. According to reports, all passengers and crew aboard the Mumbai-Dubai flight 9W 526 were deplaned as soon as it made an emergency landing. There were more than 50 passengers and seven crew on the flight. Muscat airport was closed for sometime after the security scare. But later the plane was cleared for onward travel after the threat turned out to be hoax. The flight landed in the Omani capital safely at 2:50 PM IST and was taken to the isolation bay for passengers and crew to disembark. Omani security agencies scanned the aircraft, passengers and baggage and, after a thorough search, the plane was cleared for take-off, a Jet Airways official later said. Doha passenger caught in Chennai with 3 kg gold on body

A passenger from Doha, Qatar was caught by Customs personnel in Chennai for strapping several bars of gold, weighing nearly 3.1 kg, under his clothing. Siraj, of Bangalore, arrived early on Sunday from Doha on a Qatar Airways flight and tried to leave claiming he had nothing to declare. But customs officials noticed that his body contour wasn’t uniform and ushered him in for a quick check. When Siraj removed the layers of clothing, they found he had strapped gold bars to his body using graphite paper to avoid detection during scanning. A few gold bars were also found in his baggage before he was quizzed. Delhi’s Ira Singhal on Saturday became the first differently abled woman to top the civil services examination in which women took the top four positions. Story of Civil Services exam topper Ira Singhal, who hails from Delhi, is truly an inspiring one. The 31-year-old woman who topped the exam in her fourth attempt has become the first physically challenged woman to top the civil services exam in the general category. India’s legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has been pronounced as ‘The Best Test Player of 21st Century’, in an online poll conducted by Cricket Australia. The ‘Master Blaster’ received an impressive 23 percent of the votes, in a poll in which more than 16,000 fans participated. Sri Lankan batsman Kumar Sangakkara bagged the second spot, while Australian duo Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting came third and fourth. Former South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis claimed the fifth spot. Shooting at Calicut Airport : CISF Jawan killed, three other Injured

An argument between the personnel of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Airports Authority of India (AAI) staff at the Calicut International Airport in Kerala escalated into a gun battle, leading to one person’s death and serious injuries to three others late on Wednesday night. The deceased was identified as CISF jawan SS Yadav, while the wounded men were AAI employees. It later emerged that Yadav was shot “accidently” during the scuffle with the AAI staffers. The Indian Express reports that the 52-year-old Yadav died after a bullet pierced through his head. Scuffle leads to shooting According to reports, it all started from a scuffle between inspector Seetharam Chaudhiri of CISF, which is responsible for security at the Kozhikode International Airport, and AAI staffer Aji Kumar over frisking. Soon many other AAI employees, including senior official Sunny Thomas, joined the argument, when Chaudhiri allegedly threatened to open fire. Maggi stops sale in India, maintains it is safe in Middle East

Nestle India has said it is temporarily taking its bestselling instant noodle brand Maggi off the shelves in India. It comes amid concerns about safety as several states have been testing the product for higher-than-allowed levels of lead. They have also been testing for the chemical monosodium glutamate, widely known as MSG. Nestle said in a statement on Friday that “Maggi noodles were completely safe. But recent developments and unfounded concerns about the product have led to an environment of confusion for the consumer.” The firm said the confusion had developed to such an extent “that we have decided to withdraw the product off the shelves, despite the product being safe”, but promised the noodles would return to the market as soon as the current problem was dealt with.
