Mumbai woman held with 4kg gold at airport

A woman was arrested at the Lohegaon (Pune) airport on Saturday for trying to smuggle eight gold bars worth over Rs 1 crore from Dubai. Agwan Assamma, a resident of Jogeshwari (west) in Mumbai, had arrived from Dubai by an Air India express flight on Saturday morning. Customs commissioner Vasa Seshagiri Rao said that Agwan tried to clear the customs channel by submitting a nil customs declaration about dutiable imported goods. However, an alert customs official noticed her suspicious activities and detained her for questioning. Rao said that a search conducted on Assamma led to the recovery of eight gold bars of foreign make concealed in a special vest underneath her clothes. The total weight of the seized gold bars is 4kg and is worth Rs 1,06,88,160. The customs officials said that Assamma hid the gold bars to avoid detection and payment of customs duty. India launches visa on arrival for 43 nations

Foreign nationals from 43 countries may now apply for and get their tourist visa-on-arrival (TVoA) online, entitling them to enter India anytime within 30 days of the approval. The electronic travel authorisation, which will be in the form of an email received by the tourist from the Indian authorities, will entitle the prospective tourist to a 30-day stay in India. The TVoA enabled with ETA, launched on Thursday by Union home minister Rajnath Singh and minister of state for tourism and culture Mahesh Sharma, will enable the prospective foreign visitor to apply for an Indian visa from his/her home country online without visiting the Indian mission and also pay the visa fee online. Once approved, the applicant will receive an email authorising him/her to travel to India and he/she can travel with a print-out of this authorization. Supreme Court : Disqualify Chennai Super Kings

The Supreme Court has observed on Thursday that Chennai Super Kings should be “terminated without further enquiry” from the Indian Premier League because one of its officials Gurunath Meiyappan has been indicted for betting by an inquiry committee. Meiyappan is the son-in-law of suspended BCCI president N. Srinivasan. Srinivasan is himself facing questions on conflict of interest. The court wanted to know exact share holding pattern of India Cements, the owners of CSK. Srinivasan is the Managing Director of India Cements. Earlier this week, the Supreme Court made a telling observation saying: “Your (Srinivasan) duty as a president is to keep the show (IPL) running and to keep it clean. India plans to raise smoking age to 25

The Union Health Ministry has recommended a ban on sale of loose cigarettes and also raise the minimum age for tobacco purchases to 25. Health Minister J. P. Nadda told parliament on Tuesday he was drawing up legislation to raise the minimum legal age for buying tobacco products, currently 18, and to force vendors only to sell full packets of cigarettes. Health campaigners has welcomed India’s plans, hailing them as a major step towards stopping nearly one million tobacco-related deaths a year. The plans, proposed by an expert panel, will need final approval by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet and parliament to become law. “This is a very welcome move by the government,” Binoy Mathew, spokesman for the non-profit Voluntary Health Association of India, told AFP. “It’s going to act as a huge deterrent especially for students and youngsters.” Around 900,000 Indians die of tobacco-related illnesses in India each year, the second-highest number after…

India Post re-invents itself with e-commerce services

India Post is re-inventing itself to cater to the growing e-commerce services industry in the country by setting up data centres, arming the postman with hand-held devices and implementing softwares for facilities like cash on delivery (CoD). The modernisation project is being supervised by an Inter Ministerial Steering Committee, which includes officials from Finance Ministry, Department of Electronics and Information Technology and other stakeholders, according to sources. The aim is to cash in on the growing demand for delivery and logistics in the eCommerce space. India Post, with its huge network and experience in handling mail and parcels, is the best agency to provide pan-India delivery service, sources said. India plans world’s 2nd largest bullet train line

An Indian Railways team is in China to chalk out plans for conducting feasibility study to build the 1,754 km-long Delhi-Chennai high-speed train corridor, world’s second largest bullet train line. The high-level team of officials from Rail Vikas Nigam Limited led by Satish Agnihotri arrived here yesterday and is in talks with China’s High Speed Rail Corp to build the Delhi- Chennai corridor for which the communist giant has agreed to conduct the study free of cost during President Xi Jinping’s visit to India in September, officials here told PTI. The proposed corridor could be the second largest in the world after China’s 2,298 km-long Beijing-Guangzhou line which was launched last year. Running at a speed of 300 km per hour, it covers the distance in about eight hours. Sky is no limit for Indian women

Ground realities may be harsh for women in India, but they’re still determined to conquer the skies. Almost 600 of the 5,050 pilots in Indian airlines are women, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). At 11.6%, this is way above the 3% global average estimated by the International Society of Women Airline Pilots. India is also seeing a steady rise in women pilots annually. The last five years saw 4,267 commercial pilots’ licences being issued, of which 628 or 14.7% went to women. One of the reasons why women pilots fare better in India than in other countries is the strong family support system they have here. “Women who go on overseas flights have to spend days away from home. India one of Twitter’s fastest growing markets

With more and more people engaging with the micro-blogging website, US-based Twitter is finding India to be one of its fastest growing markets, a top company official said in New Delhi on Saturday. “India is a big market for us. It is one of our fastest growing markets and we will be investing more here,” Katie Jacobs Stanton, Vice President, Global Media, Twitter said. She was speaking at the HT Leadership Summit. India planning for the world’s tallest building

Taking forward his ambitious project of constructing skyscrapers around Hussainsagar, Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has directed officials to construct the world’s tallest tower in Sanjeevaiah Park in Hyderabad. The 92-acre Sanjeevaiah Park is under the control of the Buddha Purnima Project Authority of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority. The world’s tallest tower at present is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai (828 metres, 163 floors). The second tallest building is the Shanghai Tower in Shanghai, which is still under construction and is expected to be 632-metre tall with 121 floors. Last week KCR asked revenue officials to identify land around Hussainsagar that is vacant and suitable for constructing skyscrapers. Seven teams of the survey department then surveyed 30 such land parcels with an extent between one acre and 20 acres. Qatar to invest Rs 60,000 crores in Indian state

Andhra Pradesh, headed by its investor-friendly Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, has on Saturday attracted investment proposals and expression of interests of $20 billion (approximately Rs 1.2 lakh crore) in entertainment and infrastructure sectors from UK and Qatar based companies.
