Petrol price has been cut by Rs 2.41 a litre, the sixth reduction since August, and diesel by Rs 2.25 per litre on back of falling international oil rates. The reduction in rates of petrol and diesel, which was deregulated for the first time in more than a decade, will be effective from 1st November, Indian Oil Corp, the nation’s largest fuel retailer, announced. India bans first-class air travel for officials

India’s government has banned first class air travel for bureaucrats, meetings in five-star hotels and purchases of cars in a series of tough austerity measures. The moves are aimed at achieving a fiscal deficit target of 4.1% of the gross domestic product for this year. India’s economy has slowed in recent years, growing by 4.7% in 2013-14. The previous Congress-led government had initiated similar measures in 2012 and 2013 to trim the deficit. The latest austerity measures “are intended at promoting fiscal discipline, without restricting the operational efficiency of the government”, a finance ministry statement quoted by the Press Trust of India news agency said. “In the context of the current fiscal situation, there is a need to continue to rationalise expenditure and optimise available resources,” it added. New jobs have been frozen and purchases of cars have been mostly banned, reports said. Officials have been asked to use video…

Tendulkar inducted into Bradman Hall of Fame

Sachin Tendulkar added another feather to his cap on Wednesday when the Indian batting legend was inducted as one of the latest honourees in the Bradman Foundation. At a gala dinner held at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground, former Australian captain Steve Waugh was the other cricketer to enter the Bradman Hall of Fame alongside Tendulkar. Tendulkar’s appearance at the annual Bradman Foundation dinner is fitting as the late Aussie great once famously said that the Indian’s technique reminded him of his own. Tendulkar, who had the honour of meeting Bradman on his 90th birthday at his Adelaide home, was later listed in an all-time XI prepared by the batting genius himself. Recalling the meeting that took place in 1998 at Bradman’s Adelaide’s home, Tendulkar said both he and the other invitee, Shane Warne, were so daunted they couldn’t decide who should speak first to the legendary Aussie batsman. “I…

A paan seller in Haryana got a shocker of an electricity bill this Diwali – a whopping Rs.132.29 crore ! Rajesh, who runs a shop in Gohana town in Sonipat district, received the bill for the month of October. “I was shocked to read the amount. It is not that the amount was printed wrongly only in numerals. The full amount was written in words too,” MR. Rajesh said. “I am a simple man with a small shop on rent. I use only a light bulb and a fan. My electricity bill is generally less than Rs.1,000. This bill is an absolute shocker,” he said. Admitting it as a “blunder” caused due to some technical problem in its online billing software system, Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam has found that the actual electricity bill of paan seller Rajesh Chautala was Rs. 1,668 for two months till October 14. The power…
