UAE extends aid to Kerala floods relief

The UAE government has extended financial assistance to rebuild the flood-ravaged Indian state of Kerala, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Tuesday. “The UAE government is sharing our grief. His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, has spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Kerala Floods: NRI businessman donates Rs 50 crore

Dr Shamsheer Vayalil, Chairman and Managing Director of UAE-based VPS Healthcare, has donated AED 26 million (around Rs 50 crore) towards the relief campaign for Kerala in the aftermath of the most devastating floods to affect the South Indian state in over a century. The floods have so far led to hundreds of deaths and the displacement of thousands of people. A total of AED10 million has been collected by the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation through UAE-based Indian tycoons and businesses for Kerala flood victims, a few hours only after the Foundation had launched its relief campaign in response to the directives of UAE leaders to form a national emergency committee to provide assistance to the flood-striken Indian state. Emirates warns passengers of new baggage restrictions

Passengers on US, Australia or New Zealand flights will be subject to new enhanced security screening measures, Emirates has warned passengers in a new advisory. Powders under 350 ml/grams subject to additional screening According to the advisory, under the new directives of the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA), powder-like substances in containers equal to or above 350 millilitres or grams will have to checked-in and will not be allowed in carry-on belongings or cabin baggage. Baby formula, prescription medicines and cremated human remains (ashes) are exempt from the restrictions. Powder-like substances purchased in airport duty free shops must be placed in sealed tamper evident bags along with proof of purchase. “These items will be confiscated at Dubai (DXB) as well as Milan (MXP) and Athens (ATH), depending on the last point of departure,” the advisory added. Nipah virus alert: UAE asks residents to avoid Kerala trips

The UAE on Thursday asked travellers to postpone unnecessary trips to Kerala till the Nipah virus outbreak in the south Indian state becomes under control. In a media statement, the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) alerted people travelling to Kerala to be aware of the possibility of contracting the infection and advised them to postpone unnecessary travel till the situation will be controlled. “The ministry works with its strategic partners to assess the risk of importation of Nipah virus (NiV) cases to the country and put the necessary control measures. Also, Mohap is in continuous coordination with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to implement the global recommendations,” read the statement. Around 2,000 prisoners to be released ahead of Ramadan in UAE

Rulers of three emirates in the UAE have ordered the release of around 2,000 prisoners ahead of the holy month of Ramadan. On Tuesday, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has ordered the release of 700 prisoners ahead of the holy month of Ramadan. Announcing the news on Twitter on Tuesday, the Dubai Media Office said the pardoned prisoners are from various nationalities. Abu Dhabi’s Adnoc considers investment in Indian refinery

Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. is looking into acquiring a stake in an Indian refinery as it plans to invest $45 billion at home to expand its Ruwais refining and petrochemicals complex. The government energy producer known as Adnoc is considering, among other business opportunities, joining Saudi Aramco in a potential investment in the Ratnagiri refinery project in India, Chief Executive Officer Sultan Al Jaber said in an interview with Bloomberg Television in Abu Dhabi. Adnoc also plans to invest $45 billion over five years to expand the Ruwais complex’s refining capacity by more than 65 percent, or 600,000 barrels a day, by 2025, Al Jaber said earlier in Abu Dhabi.
