Expert astronomers predict Ramadan to begin on June 18

UAE based expert astronomers have predicted that this year’s Ramadan will likely start on Thursday, June 18, Gulf News has reported. Rohan Roberts, lead astronomer and founder of Café Scientifique Dubai, said about 3 per cent of the new moon will be visible on the eve of June 17 before it sets over the western horizon at 7:54 pm, making June 18 the first day of Ramadan. “It seems very likely that Ramadan will be declared to start on 18th June,” Rohan Roberts told Gulf News. According to Roberts Eid Al Fitr will possibly fall on Friday, July 17, with the new moon setting by 7:21 pm on the eve of July 16. On May 29, the Sharjah Planetarium also predicted that Ramadan this year is likely to start on June 18 and that Eid al-Fitr would fall on July 17. Indian in UAE gets 1 year jail for anti-Islamic Facebook status

A court in the United Arab Emirates has sentenced an Indian national to one year in jail for posting a “blasphemous and slanderous” status on social networking site Facebook. The Dubai Court of First Instance found the 41-year-old man SG guilty of cursing Islam and the Prophet Mohammed in his status update on Facebook after he watched a video about the Iraq war in July last year, various media reports from UAE says. SG was reported to police by an Indian salesman, SF after he received a WhatsApp message with a screen shot of the post. “Once I saw the message, I reported it to police,” said SF, 24. During interrogations, SG confessed to posting insults after watching the footage. No details were given on the content of the video. Travelling to UAE ? Make sure to apply visa online

Expatriates who reside in GCC countries like Qatar can now apply online for entry permits to visit UAE through Dubai. The service aims to expedite passenger movement at airports and relieve GCC residents of the hassle of waiting in queues for their visit visas, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs has announced. The online visa application system also features an online payment method which will help passengers avoid the long queues to pay visa fees. As of now, the online system is not compulsory but merely an option for those who would like to complete the visa issuance procedure before arriving to the country. However, officials said that from October 1, all visa application processes for GCC residents must be completed online. Dubai to build world’s largest airport

To further secure its position as the world’s aviation hub, Dubai Airports is building a whopping USD 32-billion greenfield airport at the upcoming Dubai World Central, 30 km off the present international airport which already is the second busiest in the world. The proposed new airport will become the world’s largest aviation facility on completion and will have five runways which all will be simultaneously operational, all A380-compatible with a length of 4.5 km each. “We are planning a US $32-billion brand new airport at the Dubai World Central at Al Maktoum, 30 km off the present Dubai facility. 5 year boy crushed to death by elevator in Sharjah

A boy died on Friday evening after he was crushed between a wall and an elevator at his father’s new shop in the gold souq, Sharjah, Gulf News has learnt. Sharjah Police confirmed that the five-year-old Yemeni victim, identified as A.R.A.A., was pinned between the elevator and the wall of his father’s new shop. The incident happened after the elevator collapsed. The boy was with his family when the incident took place. The family had gone to the shop to celebrate its opening. Police investigations revealed that the elevator is unlicensed and only designed to carry goods to the upper floor and is not suitable for use by customers. By the time the police reached the scene, the victim was dead. The civil defence workers removed the elevator to pull out the boy’s body. The body was crushed, officials said.
