Doha may not be having an endless list of elegant Indian restaurants as the neighbouring city of Dubai does. However, there are few hidden gems which can offer you world class dining experience, while not compromising on the authentic Indian taste.
Today, we are delighted to unveil one of those palatable choices – the Tamarind Indian Restaurant. Located in the open piazza court of Lagoona Mall, Tamarind Indian isn’t particularly easy to find, but the payoff for doing so can be considerable.
The new menu, with some of the restaurant’s best sellers as well as innovative additions by the creative chefs, offers a wide range of choices to diners. The staff are friendly and happy to explain anything on the menu.
As the menu says, Tamarind Salad is an indeed an exquisite creation. Highlights of the dish include soft and delicious mustard chicken tikka and mumbai cheese roll, sprinkled with fine cut onion and leaves. (Price : QR 35)
Malai Tamatar Shorba is the seasoned tomato soup served in desi-style. What makes it special is the flavour and foam from Malai, a kind of milk cream, which is also a popular ingredient in many Indian dishes.
Tamarind serves you Malai Tamatar Shorba with garlic dokhla – a Gujarati delicacy. (Price : QR 25)
The Chaats and Sundal Sampler is pretty interesting as it presents some popular Indian chaats and South Indian street food in different look.
It has some familiar items like paani puri , bhel puri and sundal (chickpeas) chaat. The taste is authentically ethereal, while the presentation is elegant. A must try for chaat lovers. (Price : QR 29)
We opted Tandoori Tulsi Jhinga for starter, which is tandoor grilled prawns marinated with basil leaves. Served on a skewer and garnished with lime, the prawn was delicate and well cooked. The spice level was balanced and the presentation was classy.
The Ajwani Machi with chunks of hamour fish coated in spices and cooked in the clay oven is a seafood lover’s dream. The green paste dish is served with tempered yoghurt rice and sauce moilee (Price : QR 75)
We were offered a variety of breads and surprisingly Cheese Naan came out to be the winner. It was soft, smooth and luscious – something which we would definitely have in our next visit.
For those who are not familiar, naan is cooked in a tandoor and this is what distinguishes it from roti, which is usually cooked on a flat iron griddle called a tava.
We also tried Patrani Fish, which is kingfish cooked with green chutney and wrapped in banana leaf. Patrani Machhi, which is a popular Parsi preparation, literally means fish in leaves.
Kingfish lovers should try this and you would know why it is called the ‘king’ fish. Tamarind serves Patrani Fish with grilled salad noodle and raw banana chips. (Price : QR 75)
The menu had some mouth watering choices for dessert – such as Mango Phirnee, Rasberry Kulfi and Chocolate Melting Sphere – but we decided to go with the Tamarind House Specialty – Panna Cotta Sampler.
With three flavours of Panna Cottas – Madras degree coffee, dates and cardamom – the sampler was the perfect end to a wonderful dinner. (Price : QR 45)
A special mention should go to the servers who attended our table, and were excellent, guiding us through an enjoyable evening of culinary surprises and gratifications.
Tamarind Indian may not be your everyday kind of restaurant, but is a special place worth trying. The prices are a bit on the higher side, but the quality of food, presentation and service justifies it.
If you are looking to go the extra-mile for a world-class dining experience, head on to Tamarind Indian and you won’t be disappointed.
What the chef says
“With the new menu our patrons will see some additions to the menu with a contemporary stroke. We are sticking with what we do best- Presentation. The new menu which we have developed is being thoughtfully applied with the experience we have gained since our initial days of operation and few distinctions we are trying to make here in Qatar in the Indian food category.”
