Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday met business leaders in Qatar, his second stop on his five-nation tour. “Business First. For first engagement of the day, PM attends roundtable meeting with Qatari Business Leaders,” the Ministry of External Affairs tweeted.
“Qatar’s Minister of Trade & Economy welcomes PM @narendramodi, seeks more intensive eco engagement with India,” MEA said in another tweet.
09.05 PM: Qatar PM hosts banquet in honour of Indian PM
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi ended his first day here with a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Nasser Al Thani. He also attended a banquet held in his honour by Prime Minister Al Thani.
“1st day in Doha ends with a meeting with PM Sheikh Abdullah Bin Nasser Al Thani who also holds banquet in PMs honour,” Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Official spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted.
Prior to the grand dinner, the Prime Minister interacted with Indian workers at a medical camp in downtown Doha, where he assured them of taking up problems faced by them during his talks with leaders of Qatar.

On his arrival, Modi was warmly received by Qatar’s Prime Minister Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani at the airport.
01:19 PM : First visit by an Indian PM in 8 years
This will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Qatar in the last eight years. The then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had visited Doha in 2008.
“India’s historical and close relations with Qatar is marked by mutually beneficial commercial exchanges and extensive people-to-people contacts,” External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup had said a few days back while announcing the visit.
There has been regular exchange of high-level bilateral visits in the recent past. The Emir of Qatar had visited India in March 2015. Previously, the then Emir of Qatar had visited India in 1999, 2005 and 2012.

The visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Qatar holds a lot of significance as far as securing Indian’s clean energy needs are concerned, according to New-Delhi based foreign policy experts.
Talking to Qatar Tribune, Dr Zakir Hussain, research fellow at the Indian Council of World Affairs, said that India’s dependence on Qatar for securing clean energy needs will increase significantly in the years to come.
10:30 AM : Indian PM to reach Doha today evening
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives in Doha today on an official visit to the country. Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani will meet Modi and will review relations between the two countries and ways to boost them on all fronts, in addition to discussing the latest regional and international developments.
A number of agreements and memoranda of understanding will be signed during the visit.
Besides vital security and energy interests — India gets almost two thirds of its crude oil from the Middle East — Modi will be eyeing investments from Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund for key infrastructure projects.
- Modi will arrive at Doha’s Emiri Terminal, the special terminal designated for VVIPs, on Saturday around 5 pm.
- Modi will meet Qatari Prime Minister Abdullah Bin Nasser Bin Khalifa Al Thani.
- He will also visit an Indian workers’ camp in Doha. Details about the labour camp visit has not been announced in view of security concerns.
- On Sunday, he will meet Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani.
- Modi will also meet with business leaders and members of the Indian expat community on Sunday. The meeting will be at Sheraton Hotel at 4:30 pm. The high-security event is only for selected persons.
Following his engagements in Qatar, he will leave for Switzerland on Sunday evening.
Indian PM calls Qatar Emir
HH the Emir yesterday evening received a phone call from Prime Minister Modi, QNA reports.
The phone call reviewed bilateral relations and aspects of developing them, in addition to discussing a set of issues of mutual interest. Bilateral trade between India and Qatar stands at $10bn.
