The new Souq Al Haraj will come up on Al Wakra Road close to Barwa Village. It will be spread over an area of 35,000 square metres.
The Old Souq Al Haraj
The historic Souq Al Haraj, located at the junction of Al-Najma and Al-Mansoura, is Qatar’s only market for used goods. For many years it has been the place to sell your old goods as well as to look for bargains.
The shops in the vast single-storey market complex sell both used and new furniture, home furnishings including carpets, air-conditioners, refrigerators, stoves, utensils, and household and electrical appliances, among other things.
It has been a delight of low-income workers and limited-income families. The Souq receives heavy footfall particularly on Thursdays and Fridays, as many people are looking for affordable second-hand goods.
Temporary stalls on weekends sell everything from toys to mobile phones.
Recently there were reports that the Souq will be replaced by a huge commercial complex that would also include two hotels. The ambitious project is part of the modern infrastructure facilities being developed in the country.
The New Souq Al Haraj
The new souq is expected to provide a number of services and will have shops, restaurants and cafes, services centres and mosques.
It will have modern buildings and parking lots for the visitors as well as the shop owners. The location of the new Souq will be easy to access by the residents of Al Wakra and Um Saeed.
The Logistics Committee of the Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) has floated a tender for developing the new Souq. The committee will receive tender documents from March 3 till March 26.
