In pursuance of the announcement made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit of the US, a notification has been issued by Government of India to the effect that its Person of Indian Origin (PIO) Cards shall be valid for a lifetime as long as the holder is holding a valid passport, the Indian embassy in Qatar said in a statement yesterday.
The PIO cardholders shall be exempted from police registration, irrespective of their duration of stay in India. Earlier, the duration of stay exceeding 180 days required police registration.
Also, all PIO cards issued till September 30, 2014, are automatically deemed to have lifetime validity, the statement added.
The Gazette notification issued on September 30 fulfils the Prime Minister’s announcement that PIO cardholders would enjoy a lifelong visa to India.
Sharing the information, the PM, on microblogging website Twitter, said the efforts will “further strengthen our bond with the Indian Diaspora and give an impetus to our development journey”.
