Qatar has successfully launched an online visa issuance system for conferences and sporting events which is the first such initiative in the world, reports Peninsula.
The system was launched for the ongoing World Cup Handball 2015 and in one hour some 5,000 visas were issued to participants by a single official of the immigration department.
Mr. Mohamed Hassan Al Haidoos, head of the visa issuance team for the World Cup Handball, disclosed this to Arabic daily Al Watan.
This is a smart online system and will soon be launched to issue other visas as well since the immigration department has plans to go paperless over time, said Al Haidoos.
With the implementation of new system, visitors to Qatar for attending conferences, other events, including sporting fixtures, need not visit the embassy of Qatar in their respective countries to obtain visit visas for Qatar.
According to Mr. Haidoos, earlier the visa issuance procedures for conferences and sporting events used to begin at least three months in advance. The new system would simplify the procedures and the applicants can merely go online, apply and get the visa.
