Qatar to offer permanent residency for certain expatriates

Qatar’s Cabinet on Wednesday has approved a bill to grant permanent residency status to certain expatriates, Qatar News Agency has reported.

Under the provisions of the bill, the Minister of Interior may grant permanent residence card to non-Qatari nationals if the conditions specified by the law are met.

Conditions for permanent residency

A decision of the Minister of Interior may grant the permanent residency status to a non-Qatari if he/she meets any of the following conditions:

  1. Qataris married to non-Qataris
  2. Those who performed great services to the State
  3. People with the “special competencies” needed by the State

Advantages of permanent residency

The permanent resident card grants its holders a number of privileges, which include state benefits in education and health care in government institutions.

They would also be given priority to recruitment after Qatari nationals in military and civilian public posts.

The holder of this card also has the right to own real estate, in accordance with the executive decisions to be issued by the Council of Ministers in accordance with the provisions of this law.

A permanent committee shall be established in the Ministry of the Interior to consider applications for permanent residence cards in accordance with the provisions of this law.

Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani chaired the regular meeting of the Cabinet today at the Emiri Diwan. The meeting was attended by Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Thani, Deputy Emir.

In his speech to the Council of Ministers, the Emir stressed the importance of investing in the spirit of positive work, solidarity and motivation that characterized the people of Qatar and its residents during the ongoing Gulf emicrisis.

He also reiterated his country’s readiness to resolve the Gulf crisis through dialogue and that if there is an attempt to reach an agreement, this agreement must include all parties without dictates and without interference with the national sovereignty and internal affairs of any country.
